Where Do You Find Math?

Math is all around us everyday. While you do go to a separate math class at HES to learn mathematical skills, math is NOT a separate entity. It is embedded in our lives.

Every time I stand on a scale to weigh myself, that's math! I use a scale to figure out how many pounds and ounces I weigh.
Every time I bake, I measure, calculate the serving sizes, heat up the oven temperature so that things don't burn and cut items (like brownies) into individual squares. That's math!

Where do you find math in the world around you? Tell how, when, and why math is important to this particular area of our lives. Get creative! Think about traveling, things around the house, your pets, your family members, hobbies, and school. Where do YOU find math?
All math students should post at least once during the month of October to this post.

Halloween is coming up and math is a big part of it. First, you have to decide on the time you go trick-or-treating. Your parents might say you need to be back at 10pm. If you leave the house at 7:30pm, you have to figure out that you can trick-or-treat for 2 hours and 30 minutes. That's elapsed time!!!

You might also go crazy counting all your candy. If your parents are like mine, then your parents might ask for a fraction of your candy. Some parents take half! Parts of a whole are fractions or percents.

Then, there's the issue of making your costume in the first place. Many people go to a fabric store and purchase yards of fabric to create their costume. Two years ago, Mrs. Perry and Mr. Perry made super hero costumes. Mr. Perry was Duct Tape Man while Mrs. Perry was Duct Tape Girl. Mrs. Perry bought yards of metallic gray/silver fabric and had to measure and cut out both costumes. She also had to estimate the cost of the fabric to make sure she had enough cash to purchase it in the first place. Measuring yards, inches and feet is math! So is estimating sums and finding change when purchasing things. All this is math all around us.

Example Post: Written by Mrs. Perry's class.

Construction workers use math everyday. They use math to try to figure out the perimeter and area of the space they are working in. They use math to figure out how much lumber to buy. Then they use money to buy the lumber and find out how much money it is to buy the lumber. Then they measure the lumber and that area to find out if it fits in that spot. You also figure out what time you started and you ended. So far, this is all math!! When the workers are done, they have to figure out how many hours they worked. It is important to all of this because it helps them do there job and get better in math!! Everyday we use math all around us!

Cashier use math ALL the time. One way is counting how many things go in the bag so nothing is smoshed. Also so giving out change they have to count to make it that he and/or she have the right amount of money to give back and it NOT be a RIPE OFF!!!

amanda,
when you go shopping you need to handle your money carefully. You could give the guy 20 dollors when its ten or reverse it your the cashier the guy pays 20 dollors and it costs 10 so you give the guy another 20 dollors GIANT mistake.that how we use math every day in one way!

A teacher uses math by teaching it. Teachers use math too. to find out like when to go to a meating.Lunch.P.E,Art, music, media, and much much much much MORE!!!! When the take attendence they mite call your names or like the P.E teachers they count you and if some one if missing they will go to a group and ask. Art teachers they need to know how long to cut the papers or when its time to clean up. They mite be drawing shaps that they have to be 2 inches long. teachers you teach cooking classes they need to teach you how long to but the like how many cups of suger do you put in or how many eggs. When to put it in the oven, when to take it out. see math is all around us so if you hate math you should should hate the world!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kids use math everyday. They use it when buying their school lunch. They have to know how much money they have left after they buy lunch. If a kid goes to buy their lunch and the lunch lady says "sorry you have no lunch money left." Then how are you suppost to get lunch? Then you remember I will start to keep track of my lunch acount.Thats how a kid uses math every day!

you find math when you go to the store like if you buy 3 or 18 thing you have to find how much you have spent and tha is math because it is money and money is math tha tis how you find math in a store

you can find math playing football like if you want play football with 2 friends and a brother you need to know how many plays you are going to do like 5 then you add two more plays 5+2=7 that is math right that is how you find math in football

Firefighters use math to determine what size hose they need to put out a fire. They also need to figure out how long the hose needs to be to reach the fire .

The driver of the fire truck needs to figure out how much water will be needed to put out the fire.

Firefighters also need to know how long their ladders are and what size ladders are needed to rescue people from a burning building.

Everyone uses math. People use it when they go shopping to calculate change plus tax. Chefs use math to measure recipes. People use math when they travel to find arrival and departure times for their trips. Homebuilders like my dad use math to figure measurements and costs of materials to build things. People use math more than they think.

Traveling takes a lot of math because first you have to have a budget to spend your money. Add up all the money you spend on gas, food, and gifts if you need it. You need to know how many miles your car can go until you need to stop for gas again and how many miles it take to get there. When you are driving in your car you have count how many miles you have already drove. And you know how many miles it takes to get there. You subtract how miles you have drove and how many miles it takes to get there. Then you will know how many more it will take to get there. That is one way how people use math every day.

Math is absolutely every were for example for Christmas my family makes arrant. They get a charismas tree and candy canes. Of course they cost money so you would add up the total amounts of both and see how much enough is. Even when go to the atm you could do math there too. Even when the clerk gives you money you can check if you got the correct change so you known that he’s not cheating on you! Over all math is everywhere from to a gumball machine to the World Bank. Math rules!

Christmas is math.Because you have to know what time to go to bed an to get up at 5:00 sharp! Or you know how many hours past if you stay up all night like me! And to count how many gifts you get! An last but not least how many pounds you yost to wiegh. And how much you gained an how much to loose. With all the sweets an goodies!

You find math at birthday parties because you have to count how many kids you are inviting.Another way is if you have a bowling party you have to count how many lanes you need and then you have to dived the kids up.you also have to find out how much you have to spend on things like cake and bowling shoes and a lot of other things. So that's how and where you find math at birthday parties.

you can find math in reading because you need to know how many pages you need to do and how many kids are in the class and if you need to know how to write numbers on the paper that is how you find math in reading

You use math when you go shopping because you have to find out how much to give and how much you get back.

You can find math everywhere. One place you can find it is on Christmas. You have to read prices and pay for many gifts and food for your holiday parties. Gifts and snacks cost money. You need to count, add, and subtract cost.

You use even when your friends are over! If you play doll house you have different size dolls. You have to estimate if the clothes will fit the doll you are using. Or else, it would get stuck! But then you have to clean up. Your friend might clean up have the doll clothes and you might clean up the other. Thats using fractions. Then you might go to play basketball. Kepping track of score uses math. As you can see, You use math all the time. Even on the weekends!

Farmers use math constantly. They use math to find out how much seed to put in the planter, then the farmer has to figure out how many bushels of grain each grain bin can hold so no grain is spilled. The farmer then has to estimate how much money he will get for his crop. The next year he will have to use math to decide how many acres he will cultivate for that crop. As you can see farmers use math to earn their living.
